If u are facing people that build more magical defense then buy obsidian shard if not then life steal comes in handy
This build is made for dealing high damage to enemies, the whirlpool will tend to do around 110 damage a tick to non tanks and around 60 to tanks so using it against tanks isn’t effective unless ur goal is to slow them. This comes in handy during team fights if u can whirlpool the enemies and summon the kraken then hit them with the tidal wave it is typically an overkill for the average god and for those tankier gods if u need to finish them off then using your second ability is the best way to do so. Another use of the whirlpool if u need to kill a tanks is to slow the then tidal wave and get close enough to hit them with the triple trident, the trident is they way to take down tanks in this build dealing 300+ damage if u land all three tridants if u go for the spear instead of lifesteal then make sure to hit the tanks with the whirlpool this will lower their defense toward u allowing for increases damage.
Smite is an online battleground between mythical gods. Players choose from a selection of gods, join session-based arena combat and use custom powers and team tactics against other players and minions. Smite is inspired by Defense of the Ancients (DotA) but instead of being above the action, the third-person camera brings you right into the combat. And, instead of clicking a map, you use WASD to move, dodge, and fight your way through the detailed graphics of SMITE's battlegrounds.

What I had more in mind: Shoes of Focus, Book of Thoth, Spear of the Magus, Gem of Isolation, Soul Reaver, Shaman's Ring.
Now you will ask: why no Obsidian Shard? Well I consider it more situational than the Spear of the Magus you listed as situational. Spear of the Magus provides good penetration against squishies and tanks (early game typically, where they don't have much magical defense). It's also third place in the build because of how Whirlpool and Trident works.
Why no Doom Orb? Well, Doom Orb is expensive. 3200 gold is quite the price tag. In addition to that, the item's passive is reliant on either god deaths, or killing/assisting minion waves. Instead, I put Shaman's Ring in it's place, an item that is not only beneficial to Poseidon's kit, but is reasonably priced as well.
Use this guide for a more proper way to build poseidon:

There's no pen. There is none. 15 pen from the "situational" spear of desolation. Does not count.
