This start is quite a safe start with 3 of each pot and boots escape, used if team your vs is quite aggressive e.g has a lot of chase / engage
this start is if your team is confident they will have a better early, you want to build the glowing emerald into a thebes ASAP
Build your boots into Magic shoes, get thebes as soon as possible after, next item is usually Voidstone if they're heavy on the mag damage / Sov if theyre quite physical heavy and punishing your team a lot / Mystical mail if they're physical heavy but you're hurting them (mystical will be sold later)
Oni Hunters is useful if you are getting jumped a lot and are taking excessive damage, Genji is good if you are vs a Mage/Guard combo / Midguardian is strong against hunters you taunt, they auto attack you, Jade emperor is a good item if you are struggling for the kills from the taunt
pick your relic accordingly.
i usually go for med if im not comfortable my team is going to survive / aegis if im looking at a difficult team to face /blink if they have a good escape from the dash / horrific is good vs warriors / assassins with good escapes
get thebes as soon as possible, go straight into boots second
this build is useful if your confident in your escape ability (1) next item is usually Voidstone if they're heavy on the mag damage / Sov if theyre quite physical heavy and punishing your team a lot / Mystical mail if they're physical heavy but you're hurting them (mystical will be sold later)

Gem of iso is good if they enemy team is escaping a lot after your combo.
poly is more of a troll item. its not used in ranked and is more for casual play if youre destroying the enemy and want a bit of damage from your passive.
Etheral staff is an extremely useful item and i build it every time.
stone of fal is an alternative to void stone if you are feeling risky and the enemies have large damage abilites.
Tap each threat level to view Athena’s threats
If youre confident in your team, max taunt first, this is a 2 second taunt and free abilites for your team mates, taubt can cancel a lot of ults and scary abilities too like a ***ba stun,
After taunt max shield wall. This is your main damage,
Finally dash, this is only really used as an engage or escape and not needed to waste early points
Obv max ult when up
Your bread and butter combo is - dash in. Shield wall, taunt
Note. Your passive makes your next auto ranged and slightly more damaging, this is not useful when engaging as they see you dash and immidiatley know a taunt is coming so they will try to escape, the extra autos will give them time to get out,
If your matched vs players with a lot of escape, after you dash go straight into taunt then wall, youll lose a bit more damage but they wont be able to get out
Video demonstration on how her combos / passive works
Hello!
I am a Masters Athena, Ranked joust
the general consensus of playing Athena is to set your team up for kills as often as possible, this is done by dashing in, using your shield wall, taunt, and in that time if your team is competent whoever you taunted should either be dead, running or hurting bad.

mystical mail is usually sold late game, it helps a tonne in ranked joust, especially masters teir, with athena maxing taunt first to ensure kill secures your shield does minimal damage, the mystical mail gives a few extra damage points in there with the bonus of health and armour, but dropps off late, will be explaining when guide is fully complete
Alright, your explanations make sense. That said, I just don't feel Iso in its current state is worth it for a god without either DoT or ticking damage at this time. The duration of the slow got cut in half (2s to 1s). I think at that point, there are better options. As the Guard, yes, if your taunt either misses, or they beads, or timing was off and your team wasn't able to kill your target...well...you can't always do everything for your teammates. They have to also be responsible for themselves, so while getting Iso as additional CC provides further potential control, I again just don't feel it's worth it for Athena in this state. If anything, help your teammates out a bit more by fitting in perhaps an early Stone of Binding to give them more damage to help finish off the target more quickly.
As for Mystical, okay, that's good that you stated it would be sold late. And I do know earlier in a game it gives somewhat decent damage...but for the price, like with Iso, I just don't feel it's that worth it. But if you have success with it, then it's your build and your option.
first time making a guide, will be editing it as i go, just wanted to get it up here for the general build,
any suggestions drop them in here,
im a masters guardian player - athena is one of my mains :)
cheers
Welcome to the site, and thanks for making a build/guide. Athena is one of my favorite guards.
Now, I'm not saying I'm the better player...if you're Masters, then you're very likely much better than me. That said, I do have some comments/opinions I'd like to share.
You already have a listing of items under "damage" and "items to consider" but you might expand on that a bit. Damage is pretty obvious, but instead of "items to consider," you might choose general protection items (the aura items, Prid, etc.), and maybe more specifically a listing of counter items (Winged, Nemean, Midgard, Witch, Contagion, Pest, etc.).
will eventually become an indept guide
